BLF 348 (1xAAA stainless steel flashlight)

BLF 348 is a small single AAA flashlight in a clean stainless steel form.
This is a special BudgetLightForum edition flashlight, sharing design also with flashlights under other brands, but implementing some features suggested by the BLF members.

One of the main differences comparing it to other similar lights is the type of LED.
BLF 348 is equipped with a neutral white Nichia LED,which is preferred by many.

The second noticeable feature is the compatibility with regular 1.5V AAA batteries,as well as with Li-Ion 4.2V batteries.
Another important aspect of the flashlight is  its On/Off operation.Although a small easily pocketable AAA flashlight,BLF 348 gives you the comfort of operating it via reverse clicky switch at the tail.
Depending on personal preferences and ways of use, this may be a key feature.
The switch cap is flat on its top and allows tail-standing at some level, though not so stable.

The whole housing is precisely machined. There is no imperfections on my sample.
The switch cap is also made of metal, ensuring its durability.
The switch is positioned high enough to allow comfortable operation.
The UI is simple- Press the switch fully to turn the light ON/OFF.
There is no additional modes. The light is meant as an universal EDC light for the situations where additional lower modes are not required.

Comparison with similar flashlights-
Thrunite Ti, Thorfire PF03, BLF 348, Yezl S7, MXDL
Notice the difference in the LED's color.

Comparison of the tails.

BLF 348 disassembled on its base parts, with no use of tools.

The reflector is orange-peel type with fine texture. The beam in result is smooth without sharp differences between hotspot, corona and spill. As already was mentioned, the LED is Nichia 359.

The construction of the flashlight allows disassembling it on three main parts.
The front bezel is removable(it is so well fitting the battery tube,it is hard to see the line between them).
You can extract the reflector and the LED board together with the pill.
-Note that unscrewing the bezel could rotate also the LED insulating pad(a thin circular plastic pad),which stays very close to the LED's silicone dome and in my case resulted in cut silicone dome.
Removing the bezel several times to take pictures of the internal elements,I almost de-domed the LED,as the beam in this state is far from its initial condition. The bad thing is that I damaged the LED before able to take beamshots,so the beam you will see below is only demonstration of the light coming from the Nichia LED.
The beam profile is not on the original good level. Unfortunately the LED can't be repaired and I can't provide beamshots of the original beam.
A problem I found also with the position and form of the pocket clip, which adds the so preferred option for attaching the flashlight easily.
However in the original as delivered position the clip is mounted on the one part and having its pressing on the other part of the battery tube.
This makes unscrewing the tail-cap hard and also may cause damages to the tail threads.
Screwing/unscrewing the tailcap really takes much more effort than needed and I don't want to think about replacing the battery in the dark.
Bending the clip may help with the problem, but this will make it lose and not so secure when the flashlight is attached and it should keep it on place.
My solution for the inconvenient position of the clip was simple-just move it slightly to the front and it will stop catching both-tailcap and battery tube. Now changing the battery does not cause any trouble.
The flashlight is quite long and moving the clip at different position does not affect its work and stability that much.

The light from the Nichia LED is neutral white with noticeable pinkish tint on my sample, especially comparing it to other light sources. Paying attention to the accuracy of the object colors when illuminated with a flashlight,I have to note that white objects,as white paper, etc.,do not appear quite authentically.
Overall the light coming from the BLF 348 may be defined as more pleasant than the light from a cool white light, but as always personal preferences may vary.

Below is the run/time test graph.
Power source Duracell Duralock with capacity 750mAh.
To be honest I did not expect such a good performance.
The driver managed to maintain about 95% of its initial output Constant in period of 64 minutes.
You can hardly get constant output from a cheap(and not that cheap) flashlight with a boost driver.
Usually the output is highly depending on the battery voltage.

Overall the flashlight is a good EDC choice, giving you useful light and comfortable operation, easy even for new users without much experience with complex UI lights.

Fenix HL10 flashlight: http://goo.gl/mRk67o
8% off Coupon code: GBLED2016  Don't miss the chance to get the HL10 even cheaper!

Other choices: http://goo.gl/E7W019

Size comparison- AAA battery,Fenix HL10,ThruNite Ti,Bronte BT01

The HL10 is respectable small and still quite comfortable in hand. Not to mention its high versatility.
The only downside-it does not come with a pocket clip. Yet,there is a hole for a lanyard on the tail cap.
It can be carried on the keychain,as well.
Fenix HL10 is a small AAA battery powered headlamp. It can be easily used as a small EDC light, which may be very useful,as there are not many AAA flashlights with a side/ right-angle beam.

This is an animation of the clear/diffused plastic cover of the reflector,in action!
It is quick and easy to switch between more focused and diffused beam.
The cover is placed over two O-rings,which make the movement smooth and seal the element.

Specifications
-Utilizes Philips LXZ2-5770 LED (cool white, very close to neutral white with great color rendition)
-Powered by one NiMH or Alkaline AAA battery(not compatible with 10440)
-70mm length x 26mm Width x 23mm Height
-33grams (including headband,excluding battery)
-Rotating optical lens for flexible adjustment of spotlight and floodlight(a plastic ring around the LED zone, which has a smooth and slightly diffused areas allowing you to switch between normal spot beam      and slightly diffused beam,by just twisting the ring).
-180 degree vertical angle tilting possible
-Tail-standing (with the headband removed)
-Digitally regulated output mains constant brightness( pending to be tested)
-Reverse polarity protection,to protect from improper battery installation
-Made of durable aircraft grade aluminum

User Interface
It is quite convenient-3 modes Low(4Lm) -Mid(30Lm)-High(70Lm)
Press and hold the momentary switch for a second to turn On/Off the light
Press briefly to change the mode.
There is an instant mode memory.

Runtimes according to manufacturer's testings:

High Mid Low
Alkaline 40 min 2h 30min 24h
Ni-MH 1h 3h 10min 26h

-Max beam intensity 229cd (30 meters distance)
-IPX-8,underwater 2 meters
-Included accessories and spare parts: Spare O-ring,Alkaline battery,Key ring (I am a little disappointed to find the lack of a nice pocket clip, which could make this flashlight desirable even for people searching for a small right-angle beam AAA light).

Below is a run/time test on High mode.
Battery used in the test: rechargeable Duracell NiMH 750mAh.
As you can see from the graph,I measured higher max output of the HL10,than the manufacturers data.
Excellent regulation from the boost circuit. 102 lumens for 42,5 minutes.
Then the battery is empty and should be replaced/recharged. The HL10 gives you about 20 minutes with a lower output to do the needed tasks. Battery voltage after the test= 0.9V
Performance of the Fenix HL10 is impressive, having in mind its price tag.

The switch is of momentary On type. Does not lock On position.
It is small but protrude enough for comfortable operation. I found no any problem to use it.
A close up picture of the Philips LXZ2-5770 LED and its shallow reflector.
The Philips LED has slightly different board shape, which requires a little modification to the reflector.
This is a flood beam light,so the pattern is not affected.

A close up look at the diffused surface.
The back of the HL10. There are markings indicating Focused and Diffused beam position of the rotating ring.
As expected, the threads are on the needed high level. Well machined and anodized.
You can see also the bottom of the tail-cap. It does not feature tail-cap magnet.
Alkaline and NiMH batteries fit well in the battery tube.

Beamshots
 1 meter
1/20sec

3 meters
1/6sec

Fenix HL10 is one of the lights that are pleasure to use. Build quality is quite good. Handling and operating the flashlight is well thought out.
I was very enthusiastic to test this small headlamp out and it does not disappointed me,at all.
Very functional and versatile light. Great as a headlamp, great as a small EDC pocket light.
Maybe the diffused surface could be a little less transparent for more floody beam, but this surely will lead to brightness loss.
So,maybe this is the compromise Fenix's designers came to when constructing this flashlight.
A pocket clip could make the HL10 one of the best AAA EDC lights.
Almost any of the latest flashlights,no matter the manufacturer comes with the press and hold the switch to turn On/Off the light way of operating, which works great as an anti-accidental activation protection, but this slows the the operation significantly. If you like to switch the light On/Off frequently and quickly, using it for short periods of time, you may need to look for another flashlight with a physical clicky switch or just with conventional UI.
If you are already used to the press/hold UI operation, the Fenix HL10 is a great choice for every day carrying light/very compact headlamp.

Thanks for reading!

Tactical Camouflage Bag from GearBest

Hi
Flashlights are very often related to sport and other outdoors activities.
As every fishing and photography enthusiast I always need good handbags or backpacks to carry all the equipment. The specialized bags are often way to expensive-justified or not.
Fortunately, biggest online shops(mostly Chinese manufacturers) offer wide range of interesting bags.
Some of them with own design, other are actual copies of high rated and trusted, but also high priced brands like Maxpedition.

Aside from the flashlight reviews,I like to test and share my opinion also on various products like the tactical camouflage bag reviewed below.

The bag was provided by GearBest for review.Big thanks to them.
Check out their website for actual price and other great offers-

The bag is available in different colors,as I chose Accu Camouflage Pattern.
As you may see from the pictures,it looks really nice.
All different parts are well stitched.

Dual zippers on the main section.
Big metal handles on the zippers.
There is one black button on each side, which keeps a small loop securely closed.
The loop can be used for additional strap attaching or any other gadget.

The main section can be oped almost all the way down, allowing easy access and insertion of all the equipment things we like to carry.

Check out my short video Demo.

There are two additional pockets under the cover.
One with a zipper and one in the space under the grey mesh visible on the picture below.
Big Velcro tape keeps the cover well closed.

There are two hidden pockets without zippers in the inner sides of the bag.
You can easily store your wallet, phone and even tablet. 7inch tablet fits just fine.

This is the front pocket. It is a little too tight-good for thin objects like small notebook or pencil.
Any type of a card will fit well too.

The bag stays and looks well even on winter clothes.

If you like the Camouflage bag,you can get it with 8% discount on the link below.

YouOKLight-Portable Flood Light from GearBest- Review

Hello
I am testing for you a fully flood portable lamp, with built in rechargeable battery pack.
The lamp is suited for different indoor or outdoor use-for work, camping, emergency, domestic illumination, construction industry, property management, and other activities.
The lamp was provided by GearBest for test and review.

Product page at GearBest- http://goo.gl/WG7Srm
Product Coupon code: 10WFloodlight

The YouOKLight comes in a cardboard box.

In real world work environment.
The angle of the light is quite wide.
Sufficient when using the lamp as an ambient light or for some work, that does not require a lot of light.
The beam is quite floody and does not provide high brightness at long distance.
If you are working something serious, you still may need a good headlamp.

The light coming from the LED is Cool White with some bluish tint.

 Two brightness levels- High/Low.

Comfortable handle thanks to the foam tube added. Could be a plus if you plan to carry the light for long periods of time, outdoor.
The size and form are quite good for stable grip.

The YouOKLight comes with two chargers-for indoor and outdoor charging.

Home charging adapter with output 8.4V, 1A

Car charger with output 8.4V, 1A

The main specifications can be seen on the back of the plastic housing.

The Lamp can be detached from its stand.Just have to unscrew the connecting bolt.
There are few openings allowing to mount the lamp to different stands, etc.

On the back of the lamp are mounted both switches and the charging port.
I should note the lack of any marking indicating, which switch is for On/Off and which for mode changing.
It seems easy to remember, but when you are in the dark and even on light is somehow hard to find the right switch. It is needed some time to get used with the position of the switches.
The charging port has water sealing, rubber cap.
Both switches are also protected by clear covers. The light can be used in humid or dusty environment.

Below is a Run/Time graph for High mode.
The maximum battery voltage is 8,4V. The LED is for 6V voltage.
The voltage is limited to the required level by a resistor.
The second-lower mode is also adjusted with another resistor.

Usually so wide angle beam is hard to measure with a regular integrated sphere. I tried to measure the lumen output in a cardboard box and got this numbers:
Max brightness on High mode 556 lumens
Max brightness on Low mode 152 lumens
The used LED is powered with 6,2V on High mode and 5,5V on Low mode.
Current draw on High mode I=750mA (4.65W)
Current draw on Low mode I=190mA (1.045W)

Here is the front of the lamp, disassembled.
Metal frame and thick tempered glass are mounted on the front.

Below is the back of the lamp disassembled.
There is a battery pack of four batteries, glued in the plastic housing.
They seem to be 18650 batteries, 2x2200mAh in series with another two in parallel connection.
The lamp is advertised as 4400mAh,7.4V.
I did not cut the wrapping(yet) to see their brand.
Here is a close up picture of the limiting resistors.

The front glass is protected from dust and water with a thick silicone gasket.

The big LED is mounted directly on the metal housing. There is quite enough thermal paste between them.
The whole back side of the housing is formed as cooling fins. The heat dissipation is quite good.
Two screws ensures tight press for good heat transfer. There are two more threaded holes, but without screws added.
Thick enough wires,well soldered.

The reflector is made of very thin metal. It reflects small part of the light and does not have the purpose to focus the light in small hotspot,so more special reflector is not needed.
